Health Benefits of Drinking Water
When we consume water, we are hydrating our cells. Water makes us feel more energized and helps protect our bodies against illnesses, headaches, and fatigue. Drinking water also helps eliminate toxins from our body.
Water has many other benefits, such as
- Regulates body temperature. We lose water through sweating. We need to replace the water we lose, so we don’t become dehydrated.
- Keeps you regular. If you don’t drink enough water, you will become constipated.
- Helps keep your skin looking youthful. Dehydration causes our skin to appear dry and more wrinkled.
- Helps with weight control. Water helps fill us up, making us not feel hungry. A recent study found that adults who increased their water consumption by 1% ate fewer calories and less sugar, salt, fat, and cholesterol. This is an effective strategy for me. I drink one or two cups of water before each meal and I am not as hungry.
- Benefits your brain. Dehydration affects cognitive functioning. Even mild hydration can affect brain function. Mild dehydration impairs mood, memory, and concentration.
- Decreases frequency and severity of headaches. Many headaches stem from being dehydrated. Drinking more water helps prevent the occurrence of headaches.
- Increases athletic performance. Because we lose water as we sweat, it’s important to replenish that water. This article says it’s the most important nutrient for endurance athletes.
- Helps ease and prevent diseases such as kidney stones, constipation, and urinary tract infections. Water helps clear our bodies of toxins helping to prevent certain health issues.

How Much Water To Drink
There are various recommendations about how much water we need to stay hydrated. In my functional medicine coaching training, I learned that half your body weight in ounces is a good rule of thumb. That means if you weigh 150 pounds, 75 ounces of water is a suitable target each day. You should check with your doctor if you have conditions where you should limit your water intake.
Some factors which can influence your proper intake are how much you are sweating, your activity level, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If your urine is mostly clear, you are probably drinking enough.

Tracking Water Bottles
I have this infusion water bottle. I love it because it’s a 32 ounce water bottle and it has an area on the side which tells me how much water I should drink by a certain time. It’s easy to drink from, easy to clean, and the infusion makes my water tasty.
I also have this infusion water pitcher (click on the picture below). Lately, I’ve been filling it with frozen mango and berries. Not only does it encourage me to drink more water, it also encourages my kids to consume more water. When I first got this, I infused the water and left it on the counter. My kids poured themselves a glass of water and said how good the water tasted. Now, I make a fresh pitcher each day. It’s gone by the end of the day! I think it helps that it colors the water and makes it pretty and more appealing.

Here are some quick tips for consuming enough water each day.
- Carry a water bottle with you everywhere.
- Add natural flavor to your water by infusing it with fruit and vegetables. Or drink herbal teas. I use this book for infusion ideas. It’s a fantastic introduction to making infused water.
- Have a glass of water on your nightstand, so you take a drink first thing in the morning.
- Get more water by eating fruits and vegetables with high water content. Some examples are celery, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, watermelon, oranges, and strawberries.
